DELOS
Few locations in Greece compare with Delos, the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo and the sacred island of ancient times. The Classical ruins exist in a magical surrounding that is unmatched both for its historical significance and its spiritual serenity. At its height, the sacred island was covered in a variety of temples and sanctuaries dedicated to a variety of gods. Today, it is a fascinating archaeological site located just two miles from Mykonos. The museum at Delos contains well-preserved works from the classical period. The impressive marble lions dedicated to Apollo at the end of the 7th century BC are the sacred survivors of perhaps as many as 16 of the marble beauties. The Maritime Quarter or the main residential area of ancient Delos contains the ruins of many beautiful mansions and villas, many of which were paved with the fine mosaics Delos was known for.
